Great post! I think we all find ourselves, at some point, on both sides of this fence. For any industry, the key to remember is focus on what you will be paying for vs. what you WANT to pay for. If you're only willing to pay someone low, bottom-dollar pricing, chances are you'll be lucky to get them in the door. Plus, think about the lowballing: are they doing anything for customer retention? How else do they separate themselves from others within their industry other than cheaper pricing? Is their quality better/worse? How is their rating with BBB and PORA? Lastly, what's the word on the street about this particular company? Do a Google or Twitter search to see if anyone's lodged a complaint. Lastly, for design, does that person's style meet or match the one you're looking for? Thanks for the great post!

Another fantastic post. As a jeweler and a freelance web designer I'm regularly on both sides of issue, getting grief for the price of my jewelry and for the price of my web design services. Oy! :)

As far as professional services, one other thing I would suggest is that when people go to a professional, they should have a very good idea of what they want from the professional and what kind of result they are looking for. They should also be able to communicate what they want to the professional that they plan to work with.

One of the things that make my job as a web designer harder and more expensive is when the client has a vision in their head, but don't communicate that to me. Or if they *don't* have a vision in their head and they expect me to figure it out. Some clients will tell me, "Just do something and I'll let you know if it feels right". That's a guaranteed way to make your project go over budget. People have to remember that professionals aren't mind readers and while they have the technical expertise, the ultimate vision has to come from the client.
